Primeira década do século XX, uma enfermidade vitimava pessoas por todo mundo. A gripe espanhola era uma epidemia. Assustado, o povo ibiunense faz uma promessa ao santo protetor e assim se deu início a romaria.
A peregrinação de fé e devoção a São Sebastião tornou-se uma das maiores festas religiosas da região. Este ano atinge seu júbilo e os festejos marcaram o centenário. Há cem anos os fiéis trazem a imagem do santo do sertão, onde está a Capela e Gruta de São Sebastião, no bairro Pocinho.
No trajeto, a imagem, protegida por um manto vermelho, passa pelos braços dos devotos, até chegar no bairro do Capim Azedo, ser acomodada no andor e seguir, ainda conduzida pelo povo, até a praça da matriz para a celebração da missa a São Sebastião e ao Divino Espírito Santo.
Durante todo o percurso, pessoas se aglomeram para acompanhar a passagem do santo, fazer suas orações e agradecer as graças alcançadas. Há uma concentração maior na sua chegada no centro da cidade, onde milhares de fiéis ocupam as calçadas da Avenida São Sebastião e Rua XV de Novembro para ver a romaria, os cavaleiros, jipeiros, ciclistas, a banda Lyra Unense.
Para celebrar os cem anos desta romaria, uma réplica da imagem de São Sebastião foi instalada no canteiro que une as duas vias públicas. Quem soube a rua XV de Novembro avista um cubo de vidro sobre um pedestal de concreto e no seu interior, a imagem do santo. À noite, lâmpadas iluminam o mártir, trazendo a lembrança permanente da devoção do povo ibiunense e do milagre que livrou Ibiúna da peste da gripe espanhola.
